Gum Recession: How Can I Stop it in the South End of Boston?

Gums

Many patients come into our office in the South End of Boston with this problem: Receding gum line. When gums recede, the supporting structures around the teeth wear away, exposing the root of the tooth. This can cause hypersensitivity to cold, and in some cases toothaches. Gum recession also facilitates disease-causing bacteria to accumulate that can not only cause inflammation but also ultimately bone resorption and even tooth loss if untreated.

To prevent gum recession, brush your teeth twice a day. A proper brushing technique must be applied, using gentle pressure and circular motions directing the brush at 45-degree angle towards the gum. An electric toothbrush is excellent for this. The importance of flossing can never be stressed enough.

If you are a smoker, quit now. Tobacco products not only add onto the plaque on tooth surfaces but they also slow the healing process of the gums and therefore can worsen the existing gum recession.

Tongue or lip piercings are one of the worst things you can do to your gum. The habitual mechanical pressure exerted by the jewelry can irritate the gums and wear them away.
Regular check-ups and cleanings by dentists and hygienists are a great way to prevent gum recession, as dentists and hygienists treat gum recession by thoroughly cleaning the affected area. Sometimes, antibiotics will be prescribed to eliminate any remaining bacteria. In severe cases, our Periodontist (gum specialist) can surgically treat the gum recession by performing a pocket reduction procedure or a regeneration surgery.
