Obesity and Dental Care in the South End of Boston

HealthyLiving

Recent studies have shown that people with a BMI over 30 regardless of smoking or diabetes status have a higher risk of developing periodontal (gum) disease than those with a healthy body weight.

Fermentable carbohydrates, such as refined wheat flour, potatoes, rice, and pasta, convert into simple sugars in the mouth. These foods are believed by many to contribute to weight gain and ultimately obesity. When ingested, simple sugars are converted into plaque if not removed immediately. As plaques accumulate, the risk for gum diseases and dental caries (cavities) become higher.

As researchers find out more about the connection between obesity and oral health, one thing is for certain: regular dental check-ups, meticulous oral hygiene homecare by brushing and flossing twice a day, and conscious dietary modifications may prevent health complications related to gum disease and dental caries.

Here at Tremont Dental Care, located in the South End of Boston, we take pride in promoting not just healthy smiles, but also healthy lifestyles in general.
